Campaign Photography.
What is Campaign Photography?
Campaign photography is an odd mix of photojournalism/documentary photography and promotional work which is used to show a theme for example my theme will be self harming, the photographs I will take and write about will demonstrate ways people may self and I will try to create an effective advert which will help people from self harming or sends a message to people who don't know about it.
For my Campaign Photography I am doing self harm, I'm going to be describing what self harm is through strong and powerful images that will help people think twice before cutting them self or just hurting themselves in general on purpose.

Self-harm IS NOT about trying to kill yourself, although those who do self-harm are significantly more at risk of suicide than the average person.

What I'm going to do in this project.
-Quotes
- "To harm others is understandable in our culture, but to willingly harm yourself is thought of as perverted."
- "Don't get me wrong, not in a heartbeat do I think that self harm is a good or a positive thing, or anything besides a heart-breaking desperate act that saddens me every time I hear about it. But there's a reason a reason why people do it."
I like this image because it shows and makes people aware of self harm also, the meaning behind this image is abusing yourself is bad because it'll affcet people mentally, the illustrator is trying to get us as viewers to help the cause and prevent it.
In this picture the photographer has used editing to create a heartfelt story, by opening wounds to show the pain and give it a shivering look. The photographer has added text in white against the dark background although effectively has used a dark meaningless look to illustrate that this person is alone and being bullied or abused so therefore the photographer shows they are taking it out on themselves and abusing their own body.
Within this picture it shows that there is an awareness towards self harming and that there is a way out of self abuse, therefore this campaign against it is to let people who are or that know people who are doing this realise they're not alone also they can get help to diminish their pain in addition to become strong people.
My ideas and my plan
My ideas are that I'm going to create picture showing emotion and giving the feeling of what the person or people are going through to show the affection and analysation of the feeling in the pictures,to make it look very real and make people motivated to stop the self-harming of adults and children.
1.For my first shoot I'm going to have a girl sat down with her head in her hands with her hair hanging down on one side of her face and then put a quote saying "I can't stop it".
2.For my second shoot I will have a boy looking out a window and I'm going to put on the window "HELP" and quote it saying "I have no one to help I need help".
3.Number 3 my third shoot I will have a boy or girls arm and then take a picture of it then photoshop that picture and put cuts on the arm spelling out "STOP SELF HARMNG" or "HELP".
4.For my 4th shoot I will put a girl on a wall with a paper or card saying "I'm the same as you but when your hurt you talk...when I'm hurt I cut".
5.For my fifth and final shoot I'm gonna have a girl sat down and I'm gonna take pictures of her arms and on her arms there will be quotes on there like "Free Me From Myself" and other things.

First Shoot
Worst Picture
This picture is bad because of the exposure, the exposure for this is bad because the flash is covering the models face and the whole picture is blurred out because its to bright and because it has been overexposed.
Best Picture
This picture is very similar to one of the pictures I researched, In my opinion this is my best picture because it shows the emotion, atmosphere and the mood. I focused on my model to express his feelings and show his hurt soul by positioning him next to a window with a hurt and depressed face. Also my exposure is good for this picture because its not to dark or to bright, I have used the rule of thirds examining different parts of my photograph, my models face is placed in the vocal point.
After Editing
Final Edits
In my opinion I really liked this shoot because I made some great pieces of work, when it was edited I really changed the effect therefore the edit exposes the black&white effect to show the full emotion of the boy so you would get a idea of what he has been through and that he needs help.
Second Shoot
Worst Picture
This is my worst picture because, the focus point is not correctly set to where it should be, which would be on the bandage. Also I have not set any white balance, as it should have been set to tungsten because I was taking the photograph inside but in my best picture I set it too tungsten so it looks more immaculate. In this picture I couldn't show the full effect and give a dark atmosphere.
Best Picture
This is my favourite picture because my exposure is set correctly as well as my focus point because its in the right place. The story behind this picture would be that a child has been self harming, therefore it's bandaged up and they are in need of help, also this picture relates back to one of my examples that I researched because they're very similar.
Some Editing
Finished Picture
After my edit you can see the full effect on the picture, the whole atmosphere is dark and abusive this is the feel towards my image because the "HELP" sign and the darker effect makes it a really miserable atmosphere.
Third Shoot
Worst Picture
This is the worst picture for my first shoot, because the model that I used was not in focus because I used manual and set my focus point to 3.5 which made my the picture really dark,I'm not getting my mood of the picture right its too dark.
Best Picture
I think in my opinion this is my best shoot because it shows a dark atmosphere I did this by setting my camera on a low exposure but letting sunlight hit my model, my focus point is set as 5.6 and manual setting for sharp effect. The mood of the picture is set as unhappy and alone in pain therefore the color scheme need to be dark clothing, this is good comparison to my research showing that loneliness is a key factor of self harming.
Some Editing
Final Edit
This edit shows a really hurt effect on my model, she has been hurt physically, mentally and socially beacuse nobody likes her, she's hiding herself away from everyone. She has been abused and abandoned by people they've hurt her in a bad way to make her feel disgraced, she needs help....

Evaluation....
When I was given this topic (Campaign Photography), I found it quite simple and easy to think of ideas of shoots with help from my research also posters I had seen.
In my opinion my last shoot most likely is my personal favourite before/after the edits, it looks professional to me because of the angles that I have used, and how the lighting worked to my advantage when I captured the original photograph of my model. Then when I edited my work on Photoshop I created a magnificent finish. I feel as though it could be used as a poster in a doctors surgery to high light the awareness of self harming.
Overall I think that my weakest point from this project is that I needed to set my white balance as I took all my pictures indoors. I believe if I had done this my pictures would've looked more professional.
